The selection of beneficiaries for the legumes and rice projects funded by the people of Japan, implemented by FAO in partnership with the County Government of Migori, and executed by First Bridge Foundation, followed a rigorous and inclusive process. The criteria, designed to ensure fairness and maximize impact, were as follows:

Community-Led Selection
Beneficiaries were identified through community-driven processes to ensure transparency and inclusivity. Community leaders, local stakeholders, and residents actively participated in nominating individuals based on their knowledge of local needs and capacities.

Focus on Vulnerable Groups
Priority was given to individuals and households in vulnerable situations, including those facing food insecurity, low income, and limited access to resources. This ensured that the project reached those in greatest need.

Ability to Cultivate Land
Selected beneficiaries demonstrated the physical ability to prepare and cultivate land. This criterion ensured that those chosen could actively participate in the project and make effective use of the resources provided.

Availability of Land
To maximize the project’s agricultural impact, beneficiaries were required to have access to at least 0.5 acres of arable land. This ensured that distributed inputs such as seeds could be planted on sufficient land for meaningful production.

Women-Centered Approach (60% Women)
The project aimed to empower women, who play a critical role in agricultural production and food security. As such, 60% of the beneficiaries were women, ensuring gender inclusion and promoting equitable access to resources and training.

Inclusion of People Living with Disabilities
The selection process emphasized inclusivity by ensuring that people living with disabilities (PLWDs) were part of the beneficiary group. This addressed barriers they often face in accessing agricultural resources and created opportunities for improved livelihoods.

By adhering to these criteria, FAO and First Bridge Foundation ensured a fair, inclusive, and impactful selection process that aligned with the project’s objectives of improving food security, empowering vulnerable populations, and promoting sustainable agricultural practices in Migori County. The beneficiaries’ selection was critical in fostering community ownership, inclusivity, and the successful implementation of the legumes and rice projects.
